If you’re after a big hotel with all the bells and whistles then this little place probably isn’t up your street. Run by the Thämlitz family, the Pension Austria is a quintessential alpine guesthouse. Expect a simple and comfortable spot to rest your head after a long day out on the mountain but with the added bonus of an in-house sauna to restore tired muscles ready to do it all again.
Here you’ll be welcomed with traditional Austrian hospitality and a hearty breakfast to set you up for skiing each morning. Only 10 minutes’ walk from the main centre of town (so close enough to sample the local restaurants and bars), the Pension Austria is in a quiet location and a stone’s throw away from the historic castle. After you’ve spent your evening exploring the town, get cosy in Pension Austria’s lounge area to play a couple of games or take advantage of the free WiFi.
Location: At the foot of the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, Kaprun has some lovely beginner and intermediate pistes on its lower slopes – as well as a few extreme runs up on the glacier, like the steep and deep Black Mamba. And Zell am See is a short ski bus away, so there’s lots more mileage within reach. Kaprun’s sprawling alpine village has an excellent public pools and spa centre and some lively restaurants and bars on and off the slopes. Don’t miss the Ice Camp, a series of interconnected igloos, complete with ice bar, ice lounge and sun deck.
Rooms come with a flatscreen satellite TV, telephone and non-smokng rooms.
• Twin Room - sleeps 2-3 (max 3 adults): Austrian twin beds, extra single sofa bed, private shower or bath, WC and balcony.
• Single room - sleeps 1: single bed, private shower or bath, WC and balcony.
Austrian twin beds: Austrian twin beds are very common in Central Europe. They’re simply one large bed frame containing two single mattresses, both with separate duvets and linen sets, that cannot be separated. Separate twin beds are less common and can often be head to head beds, rather than side by side, if they are available.
