Skiing in Geilo

The Geilo ski area spans 34km of pistes across both sides of the valley – the Geilo Centre and Vestlia areas – connected by a free ski bus. This Norwegian ski resort is perfect for beginners and families, with plenty of wide green and blue runs, well-maintained slopes, and a peaceful atmosphere. Intermediate skiers will find some enjoyable red runs, while advanced skiers can explore a few black pistes and mogul fields. Snow reliability is excellent thanks to Geilo’s northern location, and quiet slopes mean more time skiing and less time queuing.

Beginners

Geilo is one of the best ski resorts in Norway for beginners. The slopes are gentle, tree-lined, and well-groomed – ideal for learning in a calm and picturesque setting. First-time skiers can start in the Slaatta or Vestlia nursery areas, located conveniently near the village. As skills improve, you can progress to longer green and blue runs in the Vestlia and Havsdalen areas, including scenic top-to-bottom descents suitable for novices.

Intermediates

Geilo offers a solid selection of blue and red pistes for intermediate skiers. Start in the quieter zones like Havsdalshovda and Kikuttoppen, then test your skills on steeper runs such as Red 26 and the mogul field on Red 22. When the sun sets, continue the fun with night skiing under the lights, available two evenings a week.

Advanced Skiers

While Geilo is best suited to beginner and intermediate levels, there are a few challenging red and black runs for experienced skiers looking to add variety to their trip. The terrain is limited but enjoyable for a short advanced session or day trip.

Snowboarding

Snowboarders in Geilo are well catered for, especially beginners who can take advantage of dedicated instruction through the local ski schools. Experienced boarders will enjoy the relaxed riding across varied terrain, although it’s worth noting that many lifts are drag lifts. Freestyle snowboarders can visit one of three snow parks, offering jumps, rails, and features for all levels.
